In 1989, David Ballance of Manteo put an ad in a local Outer Banks newspaper inviting people interested in Shag Dancing to meet at Fast Eddie's at the Market Place in Southern Shores. 20 people came to that meeting and in May 1990 the Outer Banks Shag Club was officially started. There were 15 Charter Members.
Two years later the Club moved its weekly dances to the Sea Ranch. The Club stayed there for nearly 6 years and during that time the membership rose to over 100 members.
The Club's next move was to Madeline's at the Holiday Inn on the beach road. During that stay of about 6 years the membership reached 240 strong.
In 2005, the Club moved to Peppercorns at the Ramada Nags Head where we enjoyed a 6 year run.
We now meet on Monday evenings at Kelly's Restaurant and Tavern in Nags Head from 6:30 - 9:30pm. It is a great space with a big dance floor and a happy and accommodating staff!
(Be sure to keep an eye on our calendar for special events, such as lessons. All additionas and changes will be listed on our calendar for your Shag planning.)
Throughout the many changes in location and members, the Club has maintained its true purpose - to promote and preserve Shag Dancing and Shag Music. The Club is alive and well and the members continue to enjoy the music, Shag and Line dancing and socializing with some of the nicest people living and visiting on the Outer Banks!
We hope you will join us Mondays at Kelly's Restaurant and Tavern (milepost 10.25). Why not come early and enjoy a delicious light dinner, too?
David and Sharon Jones were Charter Members of the Outer Banks Shag Club and have remained active and vital members for nearly 25 years.
David was the Club's first DJ. He would tape the Charlie Byrd's Beach Blast from the radio and provide selections from those tapes as the weekly dance music. His knowledge of Shag music is quite remarkable. As one might expect, David has received numerous invitations to DJ for groups all over the east coast. His abilities, expertise, professionalism and charm won him the prestigious National Shag Icon designation in 2007.
Sharon Jones has been the Club's Special Event's Planner, Social Organizer, Membership Chair, Newsletter Editor & Chief, Club Treasurer and unofficial "First Lady" for many years. She has been seated on state and national Shag boards and committees and, along with her husband, David, has taught Shag and Line Dancing to hundreds of people...both here on the Outer Banks and as invited instructors up and down the east coast. It is quite possible that Sharon has never met a person she didn't like. Sharon's dancing and teaching abilities, her dedication to the Club and to Shag, her help and support of local charities and her patience and winning smile won her the coveted National Shag Icon in 2001.
Today, many affectionately think of David and Sharon Jones as the "King and Queen of OBX Shag"! They share their talents, their time, their lives with us and they do it all with such class!
Thank you! We love you!
Jack and Liz Bohne joined the Outer Banks Shag Club many years ago when the Club was meeting at the Sea Ranch. They were always there to greet you each Monday evening and at all special events. They were sincerely interested in each and every person and loved to share stories and laughs. You quickly felt like one of their family. Together they made-up a solid foundation on which all of us relied. They reminded us that being kind, sharing happiness and really caring for one another is a great way to live.
Jack started his DJ career around the turn of the 21st century when the Club was meeting at Madeline's. Jack's love for music, love for dance, love for golf and love for people were driving forces in his life. Above all these was his adoration and devotion to his lively wife, Liz.
For years, every Monday, Liz was the first to greet you at Peppercorns and the one that wished you a safe and happy week as you left. Jack would delight us as his spun his tunes. But, alas, Jack's health kept them from attending most of our Monday Shag and special events for the better part of this last year. As expected, Liz has been at Jack's side throughout his illness, surgeries and rehab.
Sadly, Jack passed away early this February. He was a strong, talented, sweet and gentle giant. He will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know him. I will miss his smile, the twinkle in his eyes and his hugs. He is, no doubt, now spinning those old Shag tunes for the angels.
