We are proud to announce that David Jones of the Outer Banks Shag Club
received the 2007 Shagging Icon Award which was presented at the recent ACSC
meeting at Spring SOS. Sharon Jones also received the Shagging Icon Award
in 2001.
Letters were written about David and his involvement in our club as part of the
nomination process.
Here are some excerpts from those letters:
“David has always
given his time and resources in promoting shag by teaching basic and
intermediate lessons, chairing shag events and many, many hours of providing the
music as the DJ with no recognition or compensation. I strongly feel that
without the continued efforts of David, along with his wife Sharon, the OBSC
would not be in existence today.”
"David is one of the original
members of the Outer Banks Shag Club. ........ He served as president for six
years and was active in getting the OBSC admitted into the Association of
Carolina Shag Clubs..... He is always promoting and preserving the dance we call
the shag."
“David works untiringly to make the OBSC events the success they are. He helps
coordinate the events as well as doing much of the hands-on work. For example, he directs the placement of our huge dance floor which he designed and built.
The caring attitude of David and Sharon has been the main reason we have made
shagging an important part of our retirement life.”
“David takes great pains to let all who help how much they are appreciated, and
we do have good member participation, but we all know David is the glue that
holds it together. David is one of the best ambassadors for the shag that we
know. If everyone who loves the dance would promote it the way David does …….
everyone would be shagging.”
The first Shagging Icon Awards were presented in 1995. There are now 58 shaggers
who have been honored by their peers. The ICON AWARD was created to recognize
individuals in local shag clubs, who through their hard work and dedication,
have helped their clubs prosper and grow. These individuals might not otherwise
be honored for their contributions to their club and to the dance we all love,
The Shag.
The Icon Selection Committee is made up of volunteers from past winners. The
regular members serve rotating terms. After the Board makes sure that all
criteria had been met, the nominations are given to the committee at the Mid
Winter party in January. A numerical evaluation ballot where nominees are ranked
in various areas is used to select the winners. Each committee member reads all
nominations and scores them according to the guidelines set forth on the Icon
Nomination form.
The decision to select only five winners each year was made in
an effort to preserve the honor and prestige of the award.
